Co-hosted by Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH), Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), the Houston Area Suicide Prevention Coalition (HASPC), and the Violence Injury Prevention and Research Center (VIPR)
About the Symposium
The Pele Chandler Youth Suicide Prevention Symposium is a two-day gathering where leaders, professionals, families, and youth from across Greater Houston unite to prevent youth suicide. Our keynote speaker, Brandon Johnson—a national expert in community-based suicide prevention—will guide conversations, share expertise, and help inspire meaningful action.

October 22 | 4:30–6:00 pm Photovoice Art Show
Houston-area youth use photography and storytelling to share their lived experiences with mental health. Their powerful visual narratives aim to raise awareness, break stigma, and amplify youth voices in suicide prevention.

October 23 | 12:30–5:00 pm Community Education & Discussion
An interactive afternoon for community members—including youth-serving professionals, parents, and young people themselves. Together, we’ll:
· Learn about community-based suicide-prevention initiatives from a national expert
· Review local suicide-related data
· Hear about successes and challenges in youth suicide prevention from a panel of local experts
· Engage in small-group discussions to develop community-driven recommendations to reduce suicide in Greater Houston

Special Session - Community Health Workers
October 22 | 11:30 am – 1:00 pm Community Health Worker Lunch & Learn
Brandon Johnson began his journey as a community health worker, proving that change starts at the grassroots. This session will:
· Celebrate and uplift CHWs
· Equip CHWs with practical suicide prevention tools
· Highlight the vital role of CHWs to bring hope and healing to our communities
Special Session - Researchers
October 23 | 9:00–11:00 am Special Research Session
This session will focus on identifying research gaps and tackling Houston’s most complex (“wicked”) challenges in youth suicide prevention. Researchers and student learners from leading Houston institutions will collaborate to shape a local research agenda.
