Understanding Drug Poisoning Risk and Opioid Use Disorder in Texas: Practical Approaches to Identification, Engagement, and Evidence-Based Care

This presentation will examine Texas epidemiology and the evolving landscape of drug poisonings, with particular attention to fentanyl and other emerging threats. It will review practical approaches for recognizing opioid use disorder and identifying individuals at increased risk for drug poisoning, while also highlighting interviewing, counseling, and education strategies that reduce stigma, support safety, and promote shared decision‑making. The session will cover evidence‑based treatment options for opioid use disorder, including medications and pathways for linkage to ongoing care, with discussion of the MATE Act. It will also explore opportunities to strengthen overdose prevention and response across clinical, public health, and community settings.
