📢 Suicide Prevention from the Hospital to the Community

Join Diane Kaulen, MS, CCLS and Angie Cummings, DrPH for an insightful discussion on their journey from hospital-based efforts to the formation of the Houston Area Suicide Prevention Coalition. We will discuss our process, stakeholder engagement, and using data to make informed decisions. 

Diane Kaulen, MS, CCLS is the Senior Community Initiatives Coordinator in the Department of Public Health Pediatrics at Texas Children’s Hospital, and Angie Cummings, DrPH is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Public Health and Child Abuse Pediatrics at Texas Children’s Hospital/ Baylor College of Medicine.

📢 Congratulations to Dr. Leila Wood and Dr. Diane Santa Maria on receiving their R34! Dr. Wood is the Director of Research for VIPR, and Dr. Santa Maria is on the Internal Advisory Board for VIPR. This award from NIDA is to develop an HIV and substance use prevention intervention for young adult sexual assault survivors.

Student Scholarship Opportunity

📢 Message from SAVIR: SAVIR worked hard over the past year+ to develop a scholarship with Safe Kids Worldwide. They are offering up to $25,000 to help a PhD student interested in unintentional childhood injury and SAVIR offered to reach our extensive network of researchers. The application closes on June 30th, to date no one has applied. It was in the April newsletter, will show up again in the June newsletter, is on our website, posted on social media, and was announced at the conference. I think personal outreach to encourage a student to apply could be what helps. Can you help spread the word about this scholarship to students you know and encourage them to apply. 

UTHealth Houston School of Public Health and VIPR to offer Violence and Injury Prevention Certificate

📢 Shout-out to the Training and Education Core. For the first time, there will be a Violence and Injury Prevention certificate available to degree-seeking students at the UTHealth School of Public Health. In addition, it will become available to non-degree-seeking students for the Spring 2026 semester.

VIPR Summer Undergraduate Research Interns

📢 VIPR welcomes the first cohort of summer undergraduate research interns. Students will be working alongside VIPR faculty to complete an independent project related to violence and injury prevention.
